Google Reunites Lost Friends Separated by the Partition [Video]

Google Reunites Lost Friends Separated by the Partition [Video]

The latest Google ad captures the essence of the Partition perfectly.

The most viral video right now being shared all over the Internet is not of a baby dancing or a dog doing very-human tricks. It's Google's latest ad. And this time it has touched many an Indian as well as Pakistani soul with its tearful ad about two childhood friends who are separated by the Partition of India. Aptly titled “Reunion”, the Google ad is testimony to the urgent demand for improved relations between the two countries.

The Google ad which released last week depicts two long-lost friends from undivided India getting reunited by their grandchildren. The ad begins with an old man flipping through the pages of a diary, who then takes out a black and white photograph of him and his friend, Yousuf.  He tells his granddaughter about their childhood pranks including stealing a sweet called Jhajariya (made of corn, milk, ghee and sugar) from a shop situated close to an old gate in Lahore. The granddaughter uses these clues on Google search and soon manages to get in touch with Yousuf’s grandson. The latter is then shown browsing the Internet too for details about Indian visa requirements and the weather. The ad ends on an emotional note as the two friends reunite in Delhi and hug after recognising each other.

We think the new Google ad is a wonderful campaign to take cues from for better relations with our neighbour. The Partition of 1947 witnessed violent riots resulting in displacement and separation of thousands of families. The ad captures the essence perfectly. Well done, Google!
