The vandalised ad which has gone viral.
American clothing brand GAP fought a racial attack on its ad, which features Sikh actor and jewellery designer Waris Ahluwahlia. While GAP fought racism and reacted admirably, the bigger problem that remains is that our society is still divided and racism still prevails.
America is one of the most diverse countries in the world and is home to people from different backgrounds, cultures and religions. Known to be a tolerant nation, a recent incident at the subway proved that people still harbour hatred in their hearts for different nationalities.
A recent GAP ad featuring a Sikh model went viral after being vandalised with racist comments. Waris Ahluhwahlia, a Sikh Indian-American actor and designer poses with a female model in the ad. The caption of the advertisement reads – “Make Love” which has been cancelled with a marker and replaced with "Make Bombs." Someone has also gone ahead and written – “Please stop driv ing taxis” on the ad.
Senior editor at The Islamic Monthly and founder of TheMuslimGuy.com Arsalan Iftikhar posted the picture of the vandilised ad on his Twitter and Facebook page to make people aware of racism that still exists in our society.
GAP changed its Twitter page background to the image of the ad campaign.
American brand GAP showed responsibility by tweeting back at Arsalan and asking him about the location of the ad. They even changed their Twitter background to an image of Waris, showing support.
The Internet sure is a powerful medium and can be used effectively to create awareness. Kudos to GAP for the cool campaign!
