How to Stick to Your Fitness Goals in 2014

How to Stick to Your Fitness Goals in 2014

Random goals with no defined timeline remains as a fancy idea in your head.

Like most people, if your number one resolution in the New Year is that of taking better care of your health, then you are on the right track. However, to make sure you reach your fitness goals and not quit half way through the year, be careful about planning and executing them well. Here are some ways in which you can reach your health goals this year, whatever they may be.

Set definitive goals: If your goal is to lose weight, then quit smoking, eat better and work on more muscle power. You need to first identify your goal in numbers - 20 kgs of weight loss; 4 additional pounds of muscle mass; run a marathon. Then set a realistic goal, say 20 kgs in a year; 4 pounds of additional muscle mass in 6 months or run a full marathon by year end. If you clearly define your goals, then you up your chances of success significantly. Random goals with no defined timeline remains as a fancy idea in your head.

Break it up into realistic t ime frame:
If you took two years to add on 20 kgs to your frame, know that the time you will take to drop it will be at least half of that. Similarly, if you have never even run continuously for half an hour, then you can't run a marathon the very next month. Train and plan to run a half marathon at the end of the next six and a full marathon by the year end.

Enlist professional help
: Whether your goal is to run the marathon or quit smoking, enlisting professional help can ensure that you reach your goals. A professional can guide your training and diet towards your final goal, ensure crucial help and motivation when you most need it.

Enlist family support and support from friends:
Family and friends can provide valuable support and motivation to help you reach your goals. Get a friend to join you in your training regime; it will help you regularise training and let your family know your health and fitness goal s. This way everyone is on the same page and you won't have to wolf down food you don't want to or keep late nights with them which can derail your regime.

Remember your success ultimately is a result of good planning and execution. Resolutions which have no planning, remain resolutions only.

Money Talk: 6 Things You Shouldn't Do in 2014

Money Talk: 6 Things You Shouldn't Do in 2014

Don’t suffer financial ignorance, make the move from Saas to Sensex.

A year comes to an end and brings along a long list of unresolved things we vowed to do when it began. It happens to all of us, every year. Ancient men and women resolved to pay off debts and return borrowed things in return for a favour from God. These days we don’t vow to please God but to please our inner souls. We resolve to lose weight, spend more time with family, quit bad habits, start something new et al. But we hardly stick to them.

Just like a winter’s sweater, our resolutions are discarded and shelved, only to be revisited with the dawn of another new year. Ask yourself this, if it’s a new year, a new you, then why stick with the same old resolutions?!

I’ve got a simple solution to this tradition of making and breaking resolutions—Let's not make one. Instead let’s just try not to do certain things which will probably make us wiser not just in money terms but as a person too.

 1. Let hype overrule my spending decisions: Resist that itch! You know the one, which lures you into that online sale, or that Bollywood blockbuster with ticket prices so high, that you would need a loan to pay it off! Ask yourself, do you really need that stuff? Can the money saved be used elsewhere? Once you control the urge, it will be easy to do it next time too.

 2. Close my ears and eyes when the husband meets our tax planner or financial planner: Stock portfolio, demat statement, insurance premium... the moment you hear these conversations in your living room, you hastily exit the room to watch some saas-bahu melodrama! Stick around! Your spouse and the planner will be inclined to include you in the conversation as well. Don’t suffer financial ignorance, make the move from Saas to Sensex!

 3. Overspend for kids to compensate for the time I am away to work: Kids will be at home for the summer vacation and you will be away at work. The easiest way for some of us to overcome this guilt is to spend money instead. They will grow fast and you will realise that it's only money and expenditure that makes them happy. Overcome this guilt. Tell them why you are away for so many hours while they are home. Perhaps enrolling your child in a hobby or team sport will ease your guilt.

 4. Crib, crib and crib about a boring job or a boring routine at home: If only one was paid for the amount that one cribs about a job or a dull routine at home, we’d all be filthy rich! Remind yourself “If I am bored, I will take frequent short holidays with the spouse. If spouse is busy, I will take children along or perhaps do a Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD-ish) trip with my friends.” You know that money saved in Tip # 1 above? Put it to work here.

5. Be caught unaware when financial emergency strikes: I know it’s your husband who is probably in-charge of directing savings to stocks, insurance FDs etc. But ever thought what will happen if the money manager of the house falls sick or (God forbid) is incapacitated? Do you know where insurance policy papers are? Do you have the insurers’ or your bank’s helpline number on your fast dialing list? Do you know the claim process if hospitalisation is needed?
Let 2014 be the year when you don’t pay a steep price for ignorance.

6 Keeping up with Mrs. Mehta (or Mrs. Gupta): Did I say birthday parties? It’s the peer pressure that makes us overdo things like birthday parties. If your child's classmate threw a party at the club house, you would want to outdo it with a Pizza Hut party. Kids also naturally get into this one-upmanship when they attend these parties. My son’s pre-primary school principal often tells parents “Does it really matter to kids? Do they really care about the theme or the surroundings?” The competition to keep up is in our mind, not theirs, she adds!

Consider meditation and Yoga to restore your rhythm. This card also tells you to accept something that you have been ignoring for long.

Lesson: Don't take everything on face value, for there is a strong possibility of some gossips, plans, strategies hidden under the surface. Investigate what exactly is going on and demand to know the truth. The truth may be bitter but turning a blind eye to it may not change anything. Enjoy the good times and make your loved ones a part of the celebrations. Nine of Cups is one of the most positive cards of the entire deck. No wonder this card is often referred to as the Wish Card.

Lesson: Enjoy the good times! Life is much better than before, despite some nagging issues. Don't see the world through the rose-coloured glasses, though. The Nine of Cups tells you to learn from past experiences and handle the troubling issues, whatever they may be, with maturit y. Be realistic while you sort out those issues, otherwise you will complicate them even more. Also, be careful of deception and don't be misguided by mere appearances. The needs of your near and dear ones will be in focus as you will be more inclined to fulfil their de mands. And the best part is, your current financial position will allow you to buy the things that you always wanted to. Raise a toast, my friend!

Lesson: The Ten of Pentacles card tells you to aim for wholesome growth and to give equal importance to long-term as well as short-term goals. Utilise your time and energy wisely so that you get closer to your ultimate goals at a fast pace. But don't expect things to turn gold overnight. Besides, the rewards of your hard-work may not always be in terms of money and assets. So, learn to appreciate the good things in life.

Pisces
The Empress – Upright

You need to connect with your feminine energy, explore your surroundings, spend more time appreciating Mother Nature and express yourself more creatively. Consider this to be a green signal for taking the much-needed break from the routine and pampering yourself by doing things that will help you relax. How about going to a spa or a meditation centre to rejuvenate your senses? Also, spend quality time with your loved ones to nurture your relations and get emotionally closer to them.

Lesson:You may have been living life in the fast lane, but it is high time you took a moment to look around and appreciate what you have achieved so far. If there are conflicts and difference of opinions, find ways to support open communication so that everyone can express themselves freely. Give love to those who have been with you through thick and thin, and celebrate your good fortune.

6 Effective Ways to Change Your Whining Child's Mood

6 Effective Ways to Change Your Whining Child's Mood

If we wanted to make a list of things that irritate parents, we’d find children whining at the top! It’s a behavior that every child tries sooner or later. We start with the observation that, like every other behavior children have, whining is important communication. The headline is: “I feel alone! I feel powerless!”

Usually, whining happens shortly after a child’s sense of connection to their parent or caregiver has broken. The ordinary things parents must do, like feeding little brother, cooking dinner, or talking to a friend on the phone, can eat away at a child’s sense that he’s connected and cared about. For small children in a big world, feeling disconnected gnaws at their spirits. Once a child feels disconnected, any small task can bring up jumbo-size feelings of powerlessness.

Sometimes even when parents are available, full of warm attention at the moment, children can feel disconnected as the feeling, “I’m alone,” has already taken over.
For instance, whining often happens toward the end of a sweet, close playtime during which you’ve done the things your child loves to do. This happens because, at the prospect of the end of the good time, feelings of helplessness or loneliness stored up from earlier experience crop up and take over.

Looking Back at 2013 with Gratitude

Looking Back at 2013 with Gratitude

So this is the end of another year and the start of a new one. Take this time to honour and reflect the year gone by, stop now, breathe into the centre of your body, imagine that you have an axis running through your physical body from the top of your head to the ground and notice your thoughts and feelings.

Bring yourself back to last New Year's eve and think about where you were, who you were with and the celebration. Connect with the feelings of joy and love of being with your friends and family. Count your blessings for all the people who have touched your life in this past year. Now work chronologically starting from January and acknowledge your accomplishments and happy moments, feel the gratitude for all that you were able to do and all the events that weaved in to make the past year all that it was.

Notice yourself moving forward in the year, look at each month and bring to mind the celebration of your birthday and those of your loved ones an d notice the emotion welling up as you remember all your wins and all that you learnt. Yes, there were many. Sure there were challenges and tough times too, but notice how everything did fall into place and acknowledge yourself, your hard work and your resilience for making it through the year so beautifully and gracefully.

Allow the lose-ends or the goals not yet achieved to come to the surface and thank the Universe for more time, you have the rest of your life ahead of you and you have the gift of time, a brand new year ahead for new opportunities and fresh perspective with more wisdom than you had last year.

Recall if you were comfortable most of the time last year or if you had many instances of discomfort, of having to stretch beyond your flexibility, and realise that it was in those times that you grew the most and that you created some outstanding results in your life.

Acknowledge that through your own hard work and success, you also opened up so many opportunities for others and more than that, you inspired them and right now, make a promise and a declaration to have an UNREASONABLE year ahead, a year where you push, you stretch and you grow into the person your higher self wants you to be.

Remember that it was when you were loving and forgiving to the people around you yourself that you received more love and acceptance from others, affirm that in order to have more in your life, you need to be grateful for what you already have and be willing to use that and often risk that in order to create even more of what you so desire in your life.

Scan the year gone by, June, September, November and the weeks that just passed and visualise all the times that you went the extra mile and you pushed yourself harder beyond what you thought was possible, and see for yourself the rewards of that persistence and again declare the big goals, the big desires and make a promise to yourself, a declaration to pursue these goals with all your energy and effort, not just a little bit of energy and effort. Take a deep breath, hug yourself and think of the issues, people and thought patterns that drained your energy in the past year and see how much better the year would have been with that energy spent on the things you truly wan t instead. See that when you are not centered around your own axis and when you are too affected by someone else, you give up your balance and you cannot move towards your own dreams and find your own happiness.

Make 2014 your best year yet and promise to give it your all, so that this time next year, you look back with more to be grateful for and lots to be proud about and the confidence to breathe that sigh of self-acknowledgement that you did it. You did not hold back at all, you found the conviction and the determination to say NO to all the extra drama and stuff that could keep you away from what you truly desire. You were able to do this guiltlessly, because you understood that every “NO” was a “YES” to something else more important.

If you feel some fear about the big goals you have for next year, that’s great, it means that you are already preparing yourself to stretch beyond your comfort levels. As you know, stayi ng in your comfort zone, will not get you the outstanding results you want in your life, your body, your work, your finances and your relationships.

Finally, listen to my jigsaw puzzle visualisation exercise – it will take 12 minutes, but it will be the most important and valuable time investment you can make to yourself for the new year. When you have finished listening to it, keep that picture very clear in your mind, almost as if it were a photograph printed on the insides of your eyelids and make sure you smile and invoke the emotions of joy and gratitude that this image brings up. Have a wonderful new year and thank you for your loving support of my work throughout.

Inspiration: Mallika Sherawat
The story:
It was silly of her to try to fool the international press at the Cannes Film Festival by claiming to be the first Indian actress to kiss or wear a bikini earlier this year. But despite criticism from fellow actor Priyanka Chopra for making sweeping statements about “India being hypocritical and depressing for women”, one must admit there’s (more than) a grain of truth in Sherawat’s words. She gave a journalist a piece of her mind during a recent press conference; check out the video that went viral.

Resolution #2: Try to laugh at ourselves
Inspiration: AIB and YRF
The story:
AIB being All India Bakchod, a group of humorists and writers that call itself one of the country’s “premier comedy collectives”. And YRF being Yash Raj Films (or Yearning for Romance Films), of course. It started when AIB wanted to spoof the trailer of YRF’s latest leave-your-brains-at-home, box-office money-minter entitled Dhoom 3. And the latter flatly refused. For a good laugh and a crash course at self-deprecation, watch this video dedicated to “grumpy ole Bollywood” that’s already got about 5,00,000 hits on Youtube. The production giant tried some damage control by tweeting the video link as well as a congratulatory comment on its official page: “Hey guys! Take a look at what our fans think about us - cool stuff! Love the way they have taken our pants off!&rdq uo;

Resolution #3: Learn to tell the truth
Inspiration: Salman Khan
The story:
If you are — or were, like I was — a Salman Khan fan, you must have definitely watched his interview on Koffee With Karan. Where he said the strangest of things. About never having a girlfriend. About being a virgin. Oh, come on! Why are we so obsessed about the virtuous V — meant to be religiously preserved up until another one succumbs to another national obsession a.k.a. marriage — in our country?

Resolution #4: Accept t hat divorce isn’t the end of the world
Inspiration: Hrithik Roshan-Sussanne Khan
The story:
Talking about marriage, we should probably lighten up and allow ourselves to chuckle at the age-old joke about it being the primary cause of divorce. Instead of “hoping, wishing and praying” the Bollywood star will reconcile with his former sweetheart of 17 years, let’s just accept their decision. As this blog post points out, no outsider — friends, family, nosy neighbours — can understand the whys and why-nots of any relationship. Only the two people involved know the entire story.

Resolution #5: Aspire to progress
Inspiration: Amitabh Bachchan
The story: The Big B hates it when India’s called a developing nation and feels “proud” when developed nations laud us for the very things we were once criticised for. “I want it to be known as a developed nation,” he said, earlier this month at a public event.  For that to happen, all of these resolutions — and many more changes — must turn into the norm.

Says a source, "When Rani had come for Nita Ambani’s birthday celebrations, she'd done a recce of the palace. The confirmation came just a few days ago. For a while now, there have been speculations about Aditya having proposed to Rani and the duo having gotten engaged, all of which was fuelled by the huge rock Rani has been spotted wearing on her finger.

5 Ways to Breeze Through a New Year Party

5 Ways to Breeze Through a New Year Party

Remember to carry your beautiful smile to the party.

With New Year's Eve just a day away, we're sure you're worried about a lot of things. If you are thinking too hard about what to wear and how to make an impression at a party, then we're not too surprised. A New Year party does have that effect, especially on those who seem to get cold feet at the thought of a party. But guess what? Partying without putting too much effort couldn't get easier. Here are 5 ways to breeze through a New Year party. Get cracking, ladies!

1) Carry your smile: Remember to carry your best asset to a party, and that is, your beautiful smile! It's very essential for you to smile and look confident because that's what sets you apart from the crowd. So put on your dancing shoes, and of course that smile to be the rockstar of the party!

2) Be comfortable: No, we don't mean wear pajamas! Instead, put on something which makes you feel sexy and comfortable at the same time. How will you have fun if you're not comfortable in the first place? Wear a comfortable outfit and shoes and you are good to go!

Check out how to dress comfortably for a party here.

3) Get out of that corner: Whether you're with a group of friends or by yourself, don't sit in a corner. Get up and mingle with people at the party. Making conversations with someone you don't know may not be easy, but guess what? Sometimes you do end up making lifelong friends that way. And if the conversation doesn't go on for long, you know you have got a new perspective on things. :-)

4) Don't be full of yourself: While talking to someone, don't go on talking about yourself. Too much information is not good either. Give the other person a chance to talk otherwise you're going to come across as a show off. Be a good listener and see how easily the conversation flows.

5) Drink wisely: No one likes a person who drinks like there's no tomorrow! Make conversations with the people around you and drink at regular intervals. Drink wisely so you don't pass out before the clock strikes 12! What's the point then, anyway? PS: Don't. Mix. Your. Drinks.

Recipe: Stuffed and Steamed Melt-in-the-Mouth Fish

Recipe: Stuffed and Steamed Melt-in-the-Mouth Fish

Delicious and super easy melt-in-your mouth fish

Hailing from coastal Karnataka, you can’t help being a fish eater. Fish is very accessible here and the markets are teeming with the freshest catch of the day. Prices are much more affordable than in Mumbai, so much so that I have at times ended up bringing back frozen fish from Mangalore to Mumbai.

Pomfret continues to be my favourite fish because it has a delicate flavour to it and not many spices are required to enhance its intricate flavours. Most South East Asian palates consider pomfret to be a delicacy and do not believe in overcooking this fish. Sometimes even frying a fish like pomfret is almost sacrilegious!

I prefer my pomfret stuffed and steamed. So here’s a recipe of a delightful, delicious and super easy fish that will melt-in-your mouth leaving you asking for more.

As always, it is essential to buy the right kind of pomfret for a dish like this. I prefer buying the white one as compared to the silver or black pomfret (khapri). The white pomfret has a thinner skin which is more desirable for a dish like this.

The fish needs to be slit along the curve on its body. If you buy your fish from a regular trusted vendor, tell them you need to stuff it and they will give you the best one to suit your purpose.

Ingredients:

1 medium-sized pomfret fish (cleaned and slit from the side)
2 medium-sized tomatoes (finely chopped)
1 large onion (finely chopped)
½ tsp turmeric
3 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
3 spicy green chillies (finely chopped)
1 tbsp ghee
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves to garnish
1 small lime

Method:

1. Marinate the pomfret with a paste of turmeric, salt and lime. Cover the fish from the inside and outside. Leave this aside for about 15 mins or till you prepare the stuffing.

2.  For the stuffing, sauté the tomatoes, onion, green chillies and garlic. Do this till the onion turns transparent. Add a little salt to this and keep aside.

3. In a pressure cooker vessel place a layer of this stuffing. Stuff the pomfret from the slit side and place this on the layer. Cover the fish with the leftover stuffing.

4. Place this above a vessel into a pressure cooker with a little water for steaming. Cover the pressure cooker vessel with a lid and let it rest.

5. Steam the fish till the pressure cooker lets out 3 whistles.

6. Place the fish in a serving dish and garnish with coriander.

7. Serve with plain rice.

Gauhar Khan: I Thought Tanishaa Would Win Bigg Boss 7

Gauhar Khan: I Thought Tanishaa Would Win Bigg Boss 7

According to Gauhar, Kushal Tandon is very childlike

Did you think you’d win this season of Bigg Boss?
I didn’t think I would. For a moment, I thought Tanishaa would win. But then, Salman kept swaying our hands and that’s when I felt I still had a chance to win.

Why did you feel Tanishaa would win?
Because I saw Tanuja ji sitting in the audience. And then you do all sort of calculations in your mind. You must have seen the expression on my face. I couldn’t believe what I heard.

You never got along with Tanishaa in the house...
Yes, I never had a great equation with her. But the two of us are similar. Both of us are strong personalities and she also spoke her mind like me. She is very strong-headed. But she also had the pressure to conduct herself in a certain manner for the family she comes from. I spoke my mind and drew a lot of flak from her for it. She is very caring towar ds the people she loves. I respect her.

How do you think you conducted yourself?
I have been the way I am. It’s been a good journey. I showed the viewers what I am in real life — flawed or not flawed.

What have you learnt from the stint?
I discovered a new Gauhar Khan. Before Bigg Boss, I wasn't too sure of my strengths. I would often leave things thinking that I would not be able to finish them. But inside the house, I pushed myself to complete tasks and other chores. I couldn’t walk away from something. I couldn’t learn to control myself. That’s something I would never learn.

You came across as a very controlling woman, especially when it came to Kushal.
But that’s how I am. I am controlling in real life. I am very opinionated and I speak my mind. But this is the way I am and you saw the real Gauhar Khan inside the house. I a m a human being and I can’t be perfect.

It felt as if you were mothering him.
I admitted to my feelings for him on national television. He is very childlike, bahut bachpana hai usme. But the fact is that he pampered me and was extremely supportive. He stood by me and spoke up for me. I think my Bigg Boss journey would have been different had he not been there. With him around, it felt that I have someone who is my own. He may be childlike, but for me he was mature.

Did you feel that Kushal and you became the target every weekend during Salman Khan’s episode? Do you think he was biased?
Everybody is asking me this question. There is no better host than Salman Khan. He guides you when required and is a friend who cares. I remember how he asked the team to change a question as it sounded too harsh. I give him credit. I hate judging people.

But just now you said you are an opinionated perso n. Strong opinions are formed after judging people.
I am not judgmental. I can’t lie. If I find something wrong, I say it to their face. This is what I did inside the house. I didn’t say something 15 weeks ago about someone and told the concerned person the same when it was revealed by a third party.

You and Kushal instigated Sofia Hayat to file a police complaint against Armaan.
No, I didn’t. Kushal did and his childlike behaviour is to be blamed. I am not supposed to speak much on the topic but all I can say is that Sofia is a grownup individual and can take her own decisions. We never instigated anyone.

What about your equation now with Kushal? You announced your love for him on national television.
It’s different inside the house. I will explore our relationship, now that I am out of the house. This is actually day one of knowing him.

Bigg Boss 7: Police Complaint Against Ajaz Khan for Calling Narendra Modi 'Chor'

Bigg Boss 7: Police Complaint Against Ajaz Khan for Calling Narendra Modi 'Chor'

Ajaz Khan allegedly abused the BJP leader Narendra Modi

Bigg Boss 7 was undoubtedly one of the most scandalous seasons ever! The worst was when Sofia Hayat filed an FIR against Armaan Kohli for physically assaulting her on the show. And it did not end there. According to reports, the cops landed up on the sets of Bigg Boss 7 yet again on Saturday evening. This time it was Ajaz Khan, who apparently called BJP’s 2014 prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, a chor!!

Ajaz Khan has invited some trouble for himself yet again. It all started when Kushal Tandon, Gauhar Khan and Ajaz Khan were having a conversation in the Bigg Boss 7 house; and when Kushal asked Ajaz to comment on Narendra Modi, he called him a chor (thief) and also the fact that everybody knows about it.

The incident took place almost two weeks ago, but the scene was edited from prime time telecast. However, a small clip has gone viral on YouTube and on other social networking sites, wh ere Ajaz Khan is allegedly seen abusing the BJP leader.

The comment didn’t go down too well with MLA Gopal Shetty, who leads the BJP political wing of Kandivili and Borivili area. He has even lodged a complaint against Ajaz and the TV channel. The complaint was later transferred to Lonavala police station and as per reports, the cops are looking into the matter. If the footage is found objectionable, then Ajaz Khan might be in trouble.

After all this we have one piece of advice for Ajaz and that is he really needs to think before he speaks!

5 Things to Keep in Mind While Buying a Car

5 Things to Keep in Mind While Buying a Car

The bigger the car, the fatter the discounts being offered.

Auto manufacturers are promising fabulous discounts for those planning to make a purchase. Go through these pointers before you avail of sops

New year, old model
Car companies usually offer big discounts in December to clear their inventories before they hike prices and launch new models in January. If you buy now, your vehicle will bear the registration date of December 2013, and in a few days, it will be last year’s model. This should not matter if you are planning to use the car for at least 7-8 years. However, if you plan to change the car in 3-4 years, the registration date will matter. A 2013 model will fetch a lower resale price four years down the line. Hence, it will be prudent to wait till January to buy it. Remember that a new car should be used for at least 8 years to get a full return on investment. Sell it earlier and you could lose out on its value.

Buy within your means
The bigge r the car, the fatter the discounts being offered. However, don’t let the freebies entice you into making a purchase you can’t afford. The golden rule is that the price of a car should not be more than 60% of your annual take-home income. If your take-home salary is 60,000 a month, don’t think of buying a car priced at more than 4.32 lakh (60% of 7.2 lakh annual income). Another time-tested principle is that the car loan EMI should not be more than 15% of your post-tax monthly income, or 40% of your investible surplus after all expenses and mortgage payments. Follow these rules diligently when you choose the car model and you won’t regret the decision.

Consider the offers closely
While you should not look a gift horse in the mouth, when it comes to freebies from car dealers, a closer look is necessary. They tend to inflate the value of free accessories to make the deal seem more attractive. This is why it’s bett er to go for cash discounts rather than free accessories. Don’t fall for the exchange offers as well. Most car dealers offer to buy your old car, but the price they quote is usually much lower than the one you would get elsewhere. A bit of market research will tell you roughly how much you can expect for your car, and you won’t have to run around to find buyers. Avail of portals like Olx. in, which have made it easier to sell used stuff. 4

Transfer the no-claim bonus
All car owners know that if you don’t make a claim in a year, the next year’s premium fetches a discount. However, few know that a no-claim bonus can be transferred to another vehicle, bringing down the insurance cost of a new car. You will have to submit the photocopies of the sale agreement, transfer documents, insurance note and the car’s registration certificate, along with a letter requesting the policy’s termination, to the insurer. The l atter issues a no-claim certificate, which will get you the discount on the new car’s insurance. If the insurance of the new car works out to 15,000, a 50% no-claim bonus will reduce it to 7,500. This certificate is valid for three years from the date of issuance, but you will have to make things clear to the buyer since it is assumed that the old car comes with insurance. 5

Petrol, diesel or CNG?
Petrol is the costliest car fuel, but petrol cars are the cheapest. Diesel is inexpensive, but the diesel variants of cars are costlier by 75,000-1 lakh. They also require higher maintenance. Your choice should depend on how much you travel in a day. If you drive more than 80 km a day, go for a diesel car. You will be able to recover the extra cost within two years. This assumes that the gap between petrol and diesel prices will not narrow down further. CNG is a clean and cheaper fuel, but its availability can be an issue. Morever, the CNG cyl inder takes up a lot of boot space.

How to Get Sexy Winged Eyes

How to Get Sexy Winged Eyes

The winged eyeliner look suits everyone.

The winged eyeliner look never goes out of style and has been a favourite amongst fashionistas since the ‘50s. It looks flattering on everyone and can instantly transform your look from drab to fiery and fun. If you’re planning to try the winged eye look this party season, then read on to find out how to get it right.

You will need:

- Two angled brushes,
- Gel/ cream/ liquid eyeliner
- Concealer

How to:

  1. To begin, add foundation, concealer and/or eyeshadow primer to the eyelid and around the eye. This eliminates any redness and creates a nice base for the liner.
  2. Take one of your angled brushes and dip it into your gel/cream eyeliner. Apply an ample amount to the brush, and then use the back of your hand as a canvas to mould the tip of the brush into a sharp point.
  3. Using your brush, make a line from the outer corner of your eye. This line will determine the size of your ‘flick’. Pull your eye taut to achieve a smooth line.
  4. Go from the inner corner of your eyelid and apply the liner close to your lash line. Again, pull your eye taut to get a smooth, straight line. Join up the eyeliner that goes along the top of your eye, to the line you created from the outer corner of your eye.
  5. Fill in any gaps with some more eyeliner. Use small strokes, as they are easier to control than big, thick strokes. If you feel that you need a sharper flick, or you have made a mistake, use a clean angled brush with some concealer as an eraser.
  6. Apply mascara and kohl eyeliner to the waterline (if you wish!)

How to Add Carpets to Your Decor

How to Add Carpets to Your Decor

Carpets actually enhance the size of the room.

A carpet brings a certain warmth and comfort to a room. It provides a finishing touch to the décor and is as important as that finishing stroke of an artwork. Every home is unique and requires different kinds of carpets to add the one element that makes it complete. Most people believe that carpets makes a room seem smaller, however placing carpets actually enhances the size of your room, visually altering the size to the human eye. In 2014, the most important factor is the kind of décor you have and how well the carpets blend into them. Having said that, striped carpets will be in vogue and textures and colour will define the carpet trend.

Say for an example, in a contemporary living room, plush shiny carpets with some sheen that adds glamour in a sophisticated fashion works magic. If old school is your style, then spread out the nostalgic oriental reds and blues that add intensity to any interior décor set-up yet carves a dist inct space for itself.

The most high-traffic area of your home should be layered with carpets in darker hues. Carpets in the bedroom should be large enough so that furniture and décor can blend in and make the room look spacious. Also, the carpets should be placed in such a manner that one can experience the soft feel of the carpet when getting out of bed.

Bright-hued carpets are in vogue this season.

The sitting area is always wrought with ostentatious fixtures and decor items to present an artistic and classy appeal to the guests. One may add grace to the whole scheme by placing a contemporary carpet with bright colours, a plain rug with various weaves and textures and modern designs to the lounge area.

Children’s room should represent their persona; hence bright-hued carpets with quirky designs should be introduced and placed between the study table and the bed. The carpet and the curtains must be in contrasting shades to bring in positive vibes.

Add Sparkle to Your Look with Cocktail Rings

Add Sparkle to Your Look with Cocktail Rings

Glamorise your party wear with beautiful rings.

You might want to skip the excessive jewellery for a New Year party, and add the oomph quotient with cocktail rings instead. The trend which was invented in the 1920s and became a style statement in the 40s and 50s, has made a comeback amongst the fashionistas these days.

Whether you’re looking for one statement piece to add interest to a classic look or you love to layer on colourful pieces, cocktail rings are a great way to express your personality and individual style. They tend to be oversized and feature glittering diamonds and/or coloured gemstones. Some believe that cocktail rings must feature a large precious or semi-precious coloured gemstone of over three or four carats. Others have included rings that feature a large, unique and dramatic design, regardless of the size of the centre stone. Everyone agrees however, that cocktail rings are all about expressing your personal style in a big way.

Cocktail rings can be worn during the day or in the evening. Day wear rings should be slightly smaller and less sparkly than those worn in the evening. The design chosen should match the occasion too. For example, an elegant ring made of high quality materials is an excellent choice for accessorising a little black dress.

There are different types of cocktail rings available today. The most common of them are animal motif rings. Rings shaped like your favourite animal, insect or type of candy will truly diversify your jewellery collection. Choose something personal when shopping for such cocktail rings and you can show the world that you love kittens, or find skulls totally adorable. The serpenti and cheetah motif ring is taking rounds on the runway as well. These are a true representation of one’s wild and bold side. These look apt if worn with a LBD or a single-coloured outfit like a black jumpsuit or a dark toned suit trouser.

Floral cocktail rings are also amon g the trendiest pieces of jewellery at the moment. A ring with a big flower made of large sized gemstones like rubies or blue sapphires, sculpted out of metal are all lovely additions to any ring wardrobe and will look pretty if worn with lacy gowns or dresses.

Next up comes the large stone rings; these types of cocktail rings have large-sized gemstones set as the centre stone with small-sized diamonds on the outer side. These are apt for ethnic wear.

Glamorise your party wear with these beautiful rings which are traditional and truly opulent. In the end it’s important to choose which ones suit you and remember that a cocktail ring draws attention to the wearer's hand. So, don’t forget to polish the nails and make the hands look presentable before putting the ring on.
